Thanks to the Chaos Monkeys for their Fund Raising concert for Deltassist

Editor:

On Friday, March 4, the Chaos Monkeys played to a packed house to raise money for Deltassist.

As president of the Deltassist Board, I attended the event to support the band and thank them for helping us out.

For a donation at the door, I was treated to four very talented teenagers who stood in front of a packed house with confidence and energy. I was incredibly impressed by how great they sounded, made only more fun by having other friends join them on stage for guest appearances. Caos Monkeys poster5A

Delta looking to assist seniors: Position to provide resource for seniors looking for info

Delta council has approved using currently vacant auxiliary hours in the parks, recreation and culture department’s budget to create a part time position to interact directly with seniors looking for information and assistance. The employee is to help guide them toward social programs and support services that are available municipally, provincially and federally.

Deltassist has already developed a Seniors Services Handbook that provides information on available counselling services, continuing education, funeral planning, home support, legal services, government and other services, while bc211 is a confidential, multilingual Metro Vancouver telephone and texting service that also provides free informational and referral to a range of community, social and government services.

Empty Stocking Fund: Deltassist toy depot offers three days of free toy shopping for low income delta residents

Dozens of “elves” were hard at work Monday setting up an impressive toy shop in Delta for local families in need.

They weren’t Santa’s elves though, but rather those of Deltassist Family and Community Services, which is one of 27 community organizations supported by The Province’s Empty Stocking Fund.

DSCN0433“We call them elves,” director of operations Lorraine Yates said, gesturing towards the crowd of volunteers at East Delta Hall, where they were unloading boxes filled with toys and laying them out on tables to form shopping aisles according to age and gender.

The toy depot, which opens Tuesday and runs until Thursday, will see hundreds of families filter through to shop — at no cost to them — for their children. The families, all of which come from low-income households and have qualified for the organization’s Christmas program, will leave the hall with 10 to 12 toy gifts — from stocking stuffers, to large and medium-sized toys — for each of their children.

Deltassist’s Christmas Programs help Delta Family after their home destroyed by fire

As Shanti Narayan stands in the rain outside her former home in Delta, its windows boarded up and the blackened roof caved in, she can’t help but relive the painful moments she spent watching fire race through the house almost two months ago.

The 66-year-old grandmother was in the kitchen on a mid-October afternoon when she heard a noise somewhere in the three-bedroom house she shared with her 18-year-old grandson on 94 Avenue at 117th Street. She went to investigate and before she knew it, her living room was blanketed in thick black smoke.

“I’ve never seen (anything) like that before,” Narayan said as she stood in front of the now-vacant home surrounded by fencing. The back deck was still covered in soot and burned furniture.
